Republicans have won the House of Representatives passing a threshold of 218 seats so far. That falls short of a mid-term “red wave,” but moves the dime to thwart the Biden administration’s domestic agenda and undoubtedly opens a floodgate for multiple congressional investigations, especially with Jim Jordan (R-OH) becoming the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee.
Taking back the House paves the way for a new Speaker of the House and ending Nancy Pelosi’s second tenure as speaker.
The results came down to a handful of tight races. It was a district in Los Angeles County, California that finally put Republicans in control.
That control could have a powerful check on Biden which includes probes into Ukraine, China, Hunter Biden, covid origins, and social media censorship of views contradicting the Fauci camp on covid public-health restrictions, and even some who want to impeach Biden.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has repeatedly pledged to prioritize the fight against inflation, rising crime and border security.
“The first thing you’ll see is a bill to control the border first,” the California Republican has repeatedly stated during the mid-term elections. “You’ve got to get control over the border. You’ve had almost 2 million people just this year alone coming across.”
In a news conference the day after the election, Biden offered to work with the new Republican majority, but emphatically ruled out compromises on his priorities - social security and medicare, and climate change.
Republicans have vowed to demand steep spending cuts.
The House Republican conference voted for McCarthy to be its leader on Tuesday defeating challenger Rep. Andy Biggs, a former chairman of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus. The Arizona congressman received 31 votes to the California Republican’s 188, according to multiple sources in the room. In January, McCarthy must win 218 votes, or a majority of the House, to become speaker.
