U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday named a special counsel for two ongoing Department of Justice criminal investigations of Donald Trump on the heels of former President Trump’s 2024 presidency announcement this week followed by Reps. Comer (R-KY) and Jordan (R-OH)’s announcement that the new republican-controlled congress will investigate Joe Biden’s financial benefits as a result of his son, Hunter Biden, and his brother, Jim’s business deals. Whistleblowers have been speaking with members of both the House and the Senate. 

“It is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution based on recent developments including the former president’s announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election and the sitting president’s stated intention to be a candidate as well,” said Garland. 

Garland named former federal prosecutor Jack Smith. Previously, Smith served as as chief prosecutor for the Special Court at The Hague, in the Netherlands, where he investigated war crimes in Kosovo. 

“I will ensure that the Special Counsel receives the resources to conduct this work quickly and completely,” added Garland.

One investigation involves whether any person, including Trump, interfered with the transfer of power following the 2020 election and the Electoral College certification process on January 6, 2021. 

The second investigation’s focus is on the removal of White House documents that were found at Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida after an F.B.I. raid this past August. This investigation is expected to address whether Trump illegally removed the documents and did he or others obstruct justice. 

“I intend to conduct the assigned investigations, and any prosecutions that may result from them, independently and in the best traditions of the Department of Justice,” said Smith in his own statement. “The pace of the investigations will not pause or flag under my watch,“ added Smith. “I will exercise independent judgement and will move the investigations forward expeditiously and thoroughly to whatever outcome the facts and law dictate.” 

“This is a totally expected political stunt by a feckless, politicized, weaponized Biden Department of Justice,” stated Trump’s campaign.
