Former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tom Homan, described the loose border policies under the Biden administration and the ensuing crisis at the southern border as being done "on purpose."
Homan and the former acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) co-authored an op-ed in October in which they stated that "In just 18 months, Customs and Border Protection has recorded more than 4 million apprehensions - more than the previous four fiscal years combined. The encounters since last October have totaled more than 2.7 million, plus nearly 600,000 known got-aways and likely hundreds of thousands who entered completely undetected."
Homan went on to tell The Epoch Times, "Since Joe Biden's taken office, there's a recorded over 1 million got-aways based on camera traffic, drone traffic, sensor traffic. Recorded got-aways. So, if they arrest 114, how many of that 1 million came from a country that sponsors terrorism and is coming to do us harm?" With respect to the Biden administration completely ignoring the border problem, Homan said, "Sadly, I think it's going to take a national security incident to wake them up."
Homan has stated that he believes the border crisis is being caused on purpose by poor policies by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the direction of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the Biden administration.
Homan went on to say that "[Secretary Mayorkas] has the same data I have." Homan then explained that "When [Mayorkas] was a deputy secretary [at DHS] in 2014, 2015 under Obama, he was deputy secretary under [then-DHS secretary] Jeh Johnson. When we had a thousand entrants a day, Jeh Johnson called us all and said, 'What the hell's going on? This is a bad day.' A thousand." Homan continued, "Now they've got seven, eight thousand, and [Mayorkas is] is saying the border's secure."
Homan said that in 2014 and 2015, ICE was able to stop the flood of migrants by building detention facilities and not releasing border crossers unit they had gone before a judge. In 90 percent of cases, the migrants lost and were flown back to their country of origin.
Homan expressed his frustration with Mayorkas and why he argues that the border crisis is being caused on purpose when he said, "[Mayorkas] was the deputy secretary back then, he knew what we did. Now he's the secretary. What is he doing now? He's not using detention facilities, he's shutting them down. They're releasing [illegal aliens]. Many of them are released without even a court date, so they're not seeing a judge... He's doing the complete opposite of what worked in 2014, 2015."
"This isn't mismanagement, this isn't incompetence. This is on purpose," Homan concluded.
As for Mayorkas, he has continued to defend the number of illegal migrants crossing the southern border, blaming everything from outdated laws to a broken system for the flood of illegal immigrants entering the country.
"The immigration system, our laws, have not been reformed for more than 40 years. The problem from administration to administration, regardless of party, is the fact that we are fundamentally working within a broken immigration system, and that is the foundational challenge, with respect to the border," Mayorkas said in December.
Despite blaming a failing system and old laws, neither Mayorkas nor the Biden administration is making any effort to update laws or modernized the system to address the current crisis. In fact, Joe Biden has yet to visit the border as he enters his third year in office. Meanwhile, all Homan and the rest of the U.S. population can do is look on as the country becomes overrun with illegal migrants, and Biden sits in the White House turning a blind eye.
