In response to additional classified documents being found in the possession of former Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Mike Pence, the National Archives has now requested that the presidents and vice presidents of the last 6 administrations search their personal records for classified materials. Those required to conduct a search for classified documents include former presidents Barack Obama, George Bush, and Bill Clinton, along with former vice presidents Dick Cheney, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle.
While the scope of the pertinent Presidential Records Act (PRA) includes administrations dating back to that of former President Reagan, both Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush have since passed.
In a letter sent to representatives of the former presidents and vice presidents, the Archives wrote, "The responsibility to comply with the PRA does not diminish after the end of an administration." The letter added, "while much of the attention of these instances has focused on the classified information, the PRA requires that all Presidential records of every Administration from Reagan onward must be transferred to NARA, regardless of classification status."
"Therefore, we request that you conduct an assessment of any materials held outside of NARA that relate to the Administration for which you serve as a designated representative under the PRA, to determine whether bodies of materials previously assumed to be personal in nature might inadvertently contain Presidential or Vice Presidential records subject to the PRA, whether classified or unclassified," the letter concluded.
According to CNN reports, representatives for the four living former presidents have confirmed that they handed over all relevant documents to the Archives upon leaving office. Former vice presidents Cheney, Gore, and Quayle have also confirmed that all classified materials have been turned over to the Archive.
Current Vice President Kamala Harris, however, has been suspiciously quiet regarding the scandal surrounding Joe Biden and the growing trove of classified documents that have been found at multiple locations. Harris's silence is being taken by some as her posturing to push Biden out of the way in an effort to ascend to the Oval Office.
The White House has also been tight-lipped about the Vice President's silence regarding the classified documents scandal.
