On Friday, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte (R) signed a bill that prevents minors from undergoing gender-affirming operations.

The measure, named the "Youth Health Protection Act" is set to take effect on October 1, and seeks to increase protection for minors from "any form of pressure to receive harmful, experimental puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones and to undergo irreversible, life-altering surgical procedures," prior to being of legal adult age.

According to the Governor's office, he is "committed to protecting Monatan children from invasive medical treatments that can permanently alter their healthy, developing bodies."

On April 17, Gianforte suggested several amendments to the legislation that prevented public funds from being used to pay for cross-sex hormones, hormone blockers, or surgical procedures.

State Sen. John Fuller (R), who co-sponsored the bill commended the governor for "supporting the health and safety of Montana's children."

Meanwhile, opponents to the bill including the ACLU have vowed to sue over the issue, according to Zerohedge.

The ACLU and Lambda Legal issued a joint statement saying, "Gender-affirming care is a critical part of helping transgender adolescents succeed in school, establish healthy relationships with their friends and family, live authentically as themselves, and dream about their futures."

"If this bill is signed into law, we will defend the rights of transgender youth in court, just as we have done in other states engaging in this anti-science and discriminatory fear-mongering," the statement added.

Dr. Kathryn Lowe, who is a pediatrician and a member of the Montana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said in a statement, "My bottom line to families is that this care remains legal. To all families who are panicking, who are moving, who are listing their houses to sell...we have great hope that [SB 99] will never take effect."

The Montana state legislature gained widespread attention earlier this week when lawmakers voted to have state Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who identifies as a bisexual trans woman, removed from the floor for the remainder of the year due to her breaking professional decorum during a series of bizarre and disruptive activist outbursts.
