Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, acknowledged Saturday that he had an affair while married to his first wife, Kerstin, the mother of his two children. 

He acknowledged the affair after the UK Daily Mail reported the story. That affair and pregnancy ended his first marriage. 

“During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side,” Emhoff said in a statement provided exclusively to CNN.

“The relationship and the circumstances around it were known four years ago to Joe Biden’s vetting committee as Harris was herself going through the running mate process before being picked for the ticket, a person familiar with the conversations told CNN. The person also said that Emhoff had told Harris about the affair well before they got married.

The mother of his child, Najen Naylor, 47, was a teacher at an expensive private school for one of Emhoff’s children. She was also a nanny to the Emhoffs’ children on the side simultaneously. 

When Naylor was approached by Daily Mail reporters at her Hamptons, Long Island home, she did not deny the story.

“I’m kind of freaked out right now,” Naylor said to the news organization reporter. 

The Daily Mail reported that during the affair, Naylor became pregnant, according to a close friend, who said she “did not keep the child.”

The New York Post has reported that news of the affair and pregnancy is causing serious concern in the Harris’ camp.
