The Republican-leaning states of West Virginia primary results are shaping the Nov. 8 midterm elections when Republicans hope to win control of the U.S. Congress and where Trump-endorsed candidates are running.

Trump-backed Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) won the republican primary Tuesday night in West Virginia’s 2nd congressional district.

Leading up to the West Viriginia primary, it was a tight race between two congressional incumbents, Rep. Alex Mooney and Rep. David McKinley.  West Virginia Governor Jim Justice (R) endorsed McKinley while West Virginia Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin praised him.

Republican McKinley voted for President Biden’s infrastructure bill and the January 6 Commission. Trump won every county in West Virginia during the 2020 general election.

This West Virginia’s congressional election is the first of five primaries in which two incumbent U.S. House members will face off. It will be followed by similar contests in Georgia and Michigan and in two Illinois districts.

The primary pitted these two incumbents Republican U.S. representatives against one another in the 2nd congressional district because West Virginia lost a congressional seat due to the 2020 census. This district is solidly republican.

In West Virginia 1st congressional district primary, republican incumbent Rep. Carol Miller comfortably won with almost 70% of the vote. Late in the campaign, Trump praised Miller.

West Virginia has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives since 2008.
