Former President Donald Trump attorneys, John Rowley, James Trusty and Lindsey Halligan, attended a meeting with top law enforcement officials at the Justice Department Monday for just under two hours, weeks after they had requested the meeting.
Special Counsel Jack Smith has been investigating the former president after documents with classified markings from his White House tenure were discovered at Trump's Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, in August 2022 following a dramatic FBI raid.
Prosecutors are investigating whether there were efforts to obstruct attempts to recover those records.
It has been widely reportedly that a charging decision is imminent.
Numerous former White House aides and Mar-a-Lago employee have been called to testify before the grand jury from valets to security staff.
Sources claim that the special counsel has gathered evidence that Trump's staff moved boxes the day before a June 2022 FBI visit to Mar-a-Lago.
Trump lawyers Rowley and Trusty had written a letter in May 2023 complaining that their client was being treated "unfairly" and asked to "discuss the ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors."
Just days ago, the Department of Justice concluded its investigation into classified White House documents found at former Vice President Mike Pence’s house. The DOJ has found no wrong doing with Pence and closed its investigation.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate the classified documents found on President Biden’s numerous properties and sites connected to his foundation months ago.
In January 2023, the FBI found classified documents at the Wilmington, Delaware, home of President Biden.
That discovery was the fourth time since November 2022 that classified records or material had been found at a private address of Biden’s.
Some of the items dated from Biden’s tenure in the Senate, where he represented Delaware from 1973 to 2009. Some items were from his tenure as vice president in the Obama administration, from 2009 through 2017.
The items join a long list of an undisclosed number of classified government records previously discovered by lawyers for Biden.
His lawyers discovered documents on November 2, 2022 at a private office that Biden kept at a Washington, D.C. think tank after ending his tenure as vice president in 2017.
The White House only disclosed that discovery on January 9, 2023.
On December 20, 2022 a small number of classified records were found in the garage of Biden’s Wilmington home.
A single page of classified material was then found at the Wilmington residence on January 11, 2023. Then, the next day, five more pages of classified records were found in a room adjacent to Biden’s garage, when DOJ officials traveled there to take possession of the single page found the prior day.
It was only in January 2023 that it was revealed publicly that federal law enforcement authorities had conducted a search for government documents at Biden’s private residences.
Biden and the White House have been criticized for the two-month lag in disclosing the discovery of the first batch of classified documents at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington on November 2, 2022 -six days before the 2022 midterm elections when the balance of political party control of both chambers of Congress was a stake.
Critics have asked why searches of other private locations maintained by Biden were not conducted until after the White House disclosed the first discovery.

In response to the criticism, Biden’s attorney blamed the DOJ for not disclosing the searches publicly.
“DOJ requested that the search not be made public in advance, in accordance with its standard procedures, and we agreed to cooperate,” Bob Bauer said.
“It began at approximately 9:45 AM and concluded at around 10:30 PM and covered all working, living and storage spaces in the home,” Bauer stated at the time. “By agreement with DOJ, representatives of both the personal legal team and the White House Counsel’s Office were present.”
Alternatively, Trump’s attorneys were on the grounds of Mar-A-Lago during the August 2022 raid, but barred from the buildings.
“[Lindsey} Halligan says she and [Christina] Bobb were barred from going inside the complex, forced to remain outside, between the ballroom and residence, on the grounds of Mar-a-Lago,” as reported by CBS News.
