On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang warned that the U.S. and China were headed for "conflict and confrontation" unless the U.S. changes course.
With relations between Washington and Beijing at a historic low and tensions mounting over China's increasing aggression towards Taiwan, Qin struck a combative and authoritative tone when issuing his warning to the Biden administration.
When Qin took office last year, there were initial hopes that China would soften its aggression and "wolf warrior" diplomacy in exchange for more moderate cooperation. However, those hopes were dashed during Qin's first news conference since taking office. China and the U.S. are currently at odds over technology and trade, Russia's war in Ukraine, human rights, and Taiwan.
According to Qin, Washington's China policy has "entirely deviated from the rational and soundtrack."
Qin went on to refer to Washington's increasing competition with Beijing as suppression.
"In fact, the U.S. side's so-called competition is all-around containment and suppression, a zero-sum game," Qin said.
"the U.S. side supposedly wants to put 'guardrails' on Sino-U.S. relations and not to clash," Qin added. "In fact, it wants China not to respond in words or action when slandered or attacked. That is just impossible," Qin continued.
"If the U.S. side does not put on the brakes and continues down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can stop the derailment and rollover into confrontation and conflict," Qin concluded.
Lastly, Qin went on to blame the U.S. for China's increased aggression toward Taiwan, saying, "The U.S. bears unshirkable responsibility for the creation of the Taiwan issue."
It is unclear how the Biden administration will respond to Beijing's threats and accusations. In fact, it is unclear exactly what President Biden's China policy is at the moment, as 4 times over the past year, Biden has said that the U.S. will defend Taiwan should China attack. However, the White House has consistently backpedaled Biden's comments, stating that the U.S. maintains the position that the country will not defend Taiwan if Beijing launches an attack.
