Italians have elected the leader of the Brothers of Italy party, Giorgia Meloni, as their new Prime Minister. She will be Italy's first female PM.
In a speech given shortly after being elected, Meloni, who was holding a sign that read, "Thank you Italy," told reporters in Rome, "Italians have sent a clear message in favor of a right-wing government led by Brothers of Italy."
Liberal leaders across Europe are expressing concerns regarding Meloni's conservative values and platform. In her acceptance speech, she also noted that "We will defend God, country, and family." She has frequently been compared to former U.S. President Donald Trump in the lead-up to the election. Meloni has taken a firm stance against gender ideology and the LGBTQ lobby. She also wants to end a relentless surge of migrants to Italy by strengthening Italy's borders.
While most Italians have celebrated the election of a center-right leader, some Italians and European leaders have expressed concern and doubt about Meloni's politics and ability to govern.
In Rome, Roberto D'Alimonte, a political science professor at the private university, LUISS told Breitbart, "I am afraid of incompetence, not the fascist threat."
Others, like the vice president of the European Parliament, Katharina Barley, described Meloni's win as "worrying" given her affiliation with both Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, and former U.S. President, Donald Trump.
German Daily WELT also quoted her as saying, "Her electoral lip service to Europe cannot hide the fact that she represents a danger to constructive coexistence in Europe."
European leaders are not the only ones expressing fear over Meloni's election with Stern, a German magazine, publishing the headline "The most dangerous woman in Europe" with a photo of Meloni.
Despite a less than warm reception across much of Europe, Meloni shows no signs of backing down. As Italy faces an energy crisis with winter approaching and soaring inflation, along with an economy buried beneath debt that is 150 percent of its gross domestic product, Meloni will have plenty of opportunities to prove herself.
