In a horrifying scene Tuesday night, two trains collided head-on near the town of Temple in northern Greece. The collision has left at least 36 people dead and injured dozens more. The death toll is expected to rise.
The incident involved a passenger train carrying 350 people and a freight train that was traveling on the same track.
While rescue workers continued to comb through the smoldering wreckage of mangled passenger and freight cars, initial reports were released indicating that 36 people had been killed, with at least 66 injured.
Survivors of the crash said that the impact from the collision launched several passengers through the windows of the train cars. Some survivors struggled to free themselves after the train buckled and came to rest in a field about 380 kilometers (235 miles) north of Athens.
Local resident, Vassilis Polyzos, who was one of the first people to arrive at the scene, said, "The trains were completely destroyed, both passenger and freight trains."
"People, naturally, were scared - very scared," he added. "They were looking around, searching; they didn't know where they were."
Police have begun questioning rail officials to determine why two trains were traveling on the same track in opposite directions. Other causes that could have also led to the collision are currently unknown.
