Standing outside of 10 Downing Street accompanied by his wife, Rishi Sunak announced that he will be resigning as prime minister and Conservative Party leader.
His statement followed the elections results of a sweeping loss to Keir Starmer’s Labour Party ending 14 years of a Conservative government followed by a period of scandals, divisions, Covid-19 instability, failing public and health services, and economic loss.
After serving 20 months as Prime Minister, Sunak apologized to the public calling for “kindness, decency, and tolerance.”
"I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change, and yours is the only judgment that matters," Sunak stated. "I have heard your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility for this loss. To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly, but without success, I'm sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved."
Sunak said he respected Starmer as a "decent public-spirited man".
"He and his family deserve the very best of our understanding as they make the huge transition to their new lives behind this door," he said.
"I will step down as party leader, not immediately but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place," he added.
"It is important that after 14 years in government the Conservative Party rebuilds, but also that it takes up its crucial role in opposition professionally and effectively."
"We must hold true to that idea of who we are. That vision of kindness, decency, and tolerance that has always been the British way,” he added.
"This is a difficult day at the end of a number of difficult days, but I leave this job honored to have been your prime minister."
