On Tuesday, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Syria for a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It is the first time a Saudi foreign minister has visited Damascus since the start of the war in 2011. It is a meeting that most thought would never occur.

The meeting in Damascus also paves the way for Assad to possibly visit Riyhat in the future, where he could potentially meet with King Salmn or crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.

This comes on the heels of a "surprise" visit last week when Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad traveled to Saudi Arabia.

While diplomatic ties between the two nations appear to be quickly recovering, there are rumors that the next step in repairing relations could be for Assad to receive an invitation to rejoin the Arab League, according to Zerohedge.

The Foreign Minister and President discussed attempts being made to find a "political solution" to the Syrian conflict that would "preserve Syria's unity, security, stability, Arab identity, and territorial integrity."

According to a statement released by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the pair also discussed the "return of Syria to its Arab fold and the resumption of its natural role in the Arab world."

While the thaw between Syria and the Arab world began in 2018 with resumed relations between Damascus and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), other Arab countries in recent months have begun to consider re-establishing diplomatic ties with Syria.

Last week, Tunisia received Farhan for a 3-day visit during which the two countries agreed to resume diplomatic relations.

The rash of countries reaching out to rekindle ties with Damascus has followed the recent China-brokered rapprochement between Tehran and Riyadh. While Syria is Iran's closest ally in the Levant region, it is a hotspot of support for Lebanese Hezbollah, which will likely complicate the U.S.-backed Abraham Accords and could impede future recognition between Riyadh and Tel Aviv.
