Tuesday night, after President Biden had finished his State of the Union Address, former President Donald Trump offered his response to the President's address focusing on rising crime rates, drops in wages, the crisis at the southern border, and "corruption."
Trump, who is currently the only GOP candidate for the 2024 primary, began his remarks by saying, "Here's the real State of the Union: Over the past two years under Biden, millions and millions of illegal aliens from 160 different countries have stormed across our southern border."
Some 4.2 million illegal migrants have been apprehended by Border patrol agents at the southern border since Biden took office in January 2021 and that figure does not include the millions of known and unknown "got aways" who managed to cross the border undetected by Border Patrol.
During his first campaign stop in South Carolina on January 28, Trump reiterated that his administration would undertake rapid deportation of migrants if he were reelected.
Trump also commented on the fentanyl crisis, much of which stems from drug cartels running fentanyl and other "synthetic opioids" across the U.S.-Mexico border. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 71,238 deaths occurred in the U.S. in 2021 because of fentanyl and other similar drugs - a marked jump from 57,834 deaths in 2020.
"Drug cartels are now raking in billions of dollars from smuggling poison to kill our people and to kill our children," Trump remarked.
After commenting on the opioid epidemic ravaging the country, Trump then turned to soaring crime rates in many American cities saying, "[s]avage killers, rapists, and violent criminals are being released from jail to continue their crime wave," he said.
"Biden and the radical Democrats have wasted trillions of dollars and caused the worst inflation in half a century," Trump added.
Regarding jobs and the economy Trump said, "Real wages are down 21 months in a row, gas prices have soared and are now going much higher than even before, and the typical American family is paying $2,200 in increased energy and food costs each year."
Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that both average hourly and average weekly wages have consistently been down every month since March 2021.
Trump then went on to criticize the Biden DOJ, calling is a "weaponized Justice Department" given that it authorized the FBI to raid Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate as part of a classified documents probe and accused Biden of "persecuting his political opponents" before stating that "the administration is waging war on free speech."
In December, Trump presented a comprehensive policy platform that would "shatter the left-wing censorship regime and reclaim the right to free speech for all Americans."
"They're trying to indoctrinate and mutilate our children. [Biden is] leading us to the brink of World War III, and on top of all that, he's the most corrupt President in American history, and it's not even close," Trump concluded.
In his closing comments, Trump vowed to "reverse every single crisis, calamity, and disaster that Joe Biden has created," and to "complete the unfinished business of Making America Great Again," if elected president for another term.
