A mass shooting that took place at Michigan State's East Lansing campus Monday night ended with 3 people killed, 5 people injured in critical condition, and the shooter, a 43-year-old black man with no known ties to the university, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The shooting, which began just before 8:30 p.m., led the university to put out an alert at that time that read, "Shots fired... Secure-in-Place immediately. Run, Hide, Fight. Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means to secure-in-place, and Fight means protect yourself if no other option."
At 8:40 p.m., MSU police posted a warning, saying, "MSU ALERT: There have been shots fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. Please secure-in-place immediately. Police are active on scene. More information to follow."
The shooting took place at Berkey Hall, an academic building, and the student union on campus. The suspect fled the scene but was found off campus several hours later and reportedly shot himself in the head as police closed in.
At a 1:30 a.m. press update, police were still not naming the subject but confirmed that the 43-year-old male suspect was not linked to MSU in any way, either as a student or an employee. MSU Police Deputy Chief, Chris Rozman, said, "We have no idea why he came to campus tonight."
The suspect died approximately 4 hours after he first opened fire as he shot himself in the head when police approached him at an intersection in northeast Lansing at a location about 4 miles from the campus.
Videos emerging on social media show the chaos as students fled the scene, passing police as they rushed in to confront the shooter.
Police are confident that the deceased suspect was the only gunman. A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.
