The deadly crash on Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge linking New York and Canada’s borders was not a terrorist attack.
The fatal crash involved a husband and wife driving a Bentley at a high speed.
It was not a terrorist attack although the initial reaction set in motion federal, state, local law enforcement investigations in both countries, and briefings of both Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Joe Biden.
“I want to be very, very clear to Americans and New Yorkers, at this time there is no indication of a terrorist attack,” the governor told reporters Wednesday evening.
Investigators believe the car hit a curb and then smashed into a guardrail that sent the car airborne and over to another screening area.
The man was a New York resident and he and his wife were on their way to a KISS concert in Canada. The concert was canceled so the couple went to a casino in the U.S. instead.
At this point, investigators believe that couple left the casino and the crash subsequently occurred as they headed to the Canadian border.
The FBI has found no terrorism nexus and no explosive materials after concluding their investigation at the Rainbow Bridge scene FBI Buffalo said in a post on X.
Ricky Wilson, a former disc jockey and a local tour guide for the last 15 years told reporters on Wednesday he witnessed the airborne car and had already spoken with the FBI. He described the car going airborne, as earlier reported by CDM.
“We didn’t know if it was a terrorist attack or not at the beginning,” Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said. “However, every precaution … was taken to ensure the safety of the community.”
The crash was a “tragic accident,” he added.
