In answer to the Biden administration’s protracted apathetic denial to the nearly eight million illegals crossing the U.S. southern border, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott on Monday signed a measure to make illegal entry into Texas a state crime.

That will give state law enforcement a refreshing kickstart for combatting illegal immigration. It will empower law enforcement to arrest the illegals and grant judges the ability to order their deportation. The law goes into effect in March.

Since Abbott has been governor, he has tried unilaterally to address the massive migration of illegals crossing his state’s border. It has been dubbed “Operation Lone Star.” The state has been mired in legal battles with the federal government even over laying buoy barriers in the Rio Grande River.

Abbott has bussed illegals to sanctuary cities in blue states to shine some light on the Biden administration's indifference to the reality on the ground.

More than 50,000 illegals were sent to sanctuary cities in October and within that number, 18,000 were sent to New York City alone. Almost 70,000 illegal immigrants are now living in New York City.

Earlier this year, Abbott called upon other state governors to deploy their National Guard to the Texas border to aid in these efforts.

At that time, 24 governors pledged their support.

“Since taking office, President [Joe] Biden has willfully refused to enforce our nation’s immigration laws while systematically dismantling every effective border security policy that previously led to the lowest number of illegal border crossings in decades,” Abbott said. As a result, illegal activity “flows directly across the southern border into Texas communities, but this crisis does not stop in our state.”

“In the federal government’s absence, we, as Governors, must band together to combat President Biden’s ongoing border crisis and ensure the safety and security that all Americans deserve.”

Over 7.7 million people have illegally crossed into the U.S. since January 2021 when President Biden took office.  In the first four months of 2023, illegal crossings along the southern border alone totaled more than the population of six states. In the first seven months of 2023, total border crossings at the northern border were greater than the previous four fiscal years combined.
