Texas Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, 74, died on Friday, according to a statement from her office.

“Today, with incredible grief for our loss yet deep gratitude for the life she shared with us, we announce the passing of United States Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of the 18th Congressional District of Texas,” reads an announcement on X.

Funeral arrangements are still pending.

The congresswoman's family did not reveal a cause of death, but it was known that she had been diagnosed recently with pancreatic cancer.

Lee had been an outspoken advocate for human rights and against racism for decades and was the lead sponsor of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
