For anyone in the Democratic Party to suggest that there is nothing there in the investigation into Hunter Biden using U.S. government to further his business interests while his father was vice-president during the Obama administration, one need not going any further than the U.S. Ambassador to Italy during the Obama administration in 2016.

President Obama appointed John Phillips as U.S. Ambassador to Italy.  His wife is Linda Douglas, a former network broadcasting correspondent , who had covered the U.S. Senate and even interviewed then U.S. Senator Joe Biden on 911 on Capitol Hill. Douglas joined the 2008 Obama campaign as an advisor and later, served in the communication’s office in the Obama White House after serving on the Obama Inaugural Committee.

Hunter Biden wrote a letter to Phillips directly in 2016.  It found its way to the General Consul’s office in the U.S. embassy in Rome. It was “Red Blocked,” and passed onto several employees.

Hunter asked Phillips for assistance as a Burisma board member for a potentially lucrative energy product in Italy.

Internal documents turned over to the New York Times as a result of a Freedom of Information case show that Phillips was informed of the letter. One employee admitted to speaking with Phillips. Some employees seemed to be wary of Biden’s request asking a U.S. ambassador to get involved for a foreign entity doing business inside Italy.

“I want to be careful about promising too much,” a Commerce Department official based in the U.S. Embassy in Rome wrote to Biden. “This is a Ukrainian company and, purely to protect ourselves, U.S.G. should not be actively advocating with the government of Italy without the company going through the D.O.C. Advocacy Center."

The acronyms referred to the U.S. government and Commerce program that supports American companies seeking business with foreign governments, according to the New York Times.

Abbe Lowell, a lawyer for Biden, told the outlet that Hunter Biden had reached out to "various people" in Italy about whether they could arrange an introduction between Burisma and the president of the Tuscany region of Italy, but that no meeting ever took place.

“No meeting occurred, no project materialized, no request for anything in the U.S. was ever sought and only an introduction in Italy was requested,” Lowell said in a statement.

Nevertheless, Biden felt comfortable enough asking.

Former Massachusetts U.S. Senator John Kerry was U.S. Secretary of State at the time. Kerry's stepson Christopher Heinz had been doing business with Hunter Biden, but once Hunter Biden and Devon Archer went on Burisma's board, Kerry’s stepson pulled back from his business association with Hunter Biden and some of his colleagues, as discovered by Hill investigators, who later informed Trump's U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo in a 2019 letter.

The documents were not turned over the New York Times until after President Joe Biden had dropped out of the 2024 presidential race.

Hunter Biden's criminal tax trial is scheduled to begin early September in California. His sister-in-law and former paramour, Hallie Biden, has been given full immunity in the case to testify on behalf of the prosecutorial team, as earlier reported by CDM.
