Hunter Biden and his attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Mark Geragos, have decided to change Biden’s plea in his federal tax case in California from innocent to an Alford plea today.

The purpose of an Alford plea is to avoid the risk being convicted of more crimes emanating from the evidence presented at a trial.

Jury selection was to begin today and the trial was expected to last several weeks.

The tax trial centers on nine tax charges. A grand jury originally indicted Hunter Biden on three felony tax charges and six misdemeanor charges last year. The defendant previously pleaded not guilty for failure to pay $1.4 million.

An Alford plea would signify that Hunter Biden would acknowledge that the prosecutors have enough evidence to convict, but he is not admitting wrong doing of any crimes. In Alford pleas, a defendant agrees to accept the judicial sentencing.

Prior to jury selection, Abbe Lowell and the rest of Biden’s legal team met with Judge Mark Scarsi of the Central District Court of California, who is a Trump appointee. The plea must be approved by the judge in court.

“I think this can be resolved today,” Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell said.

Lowell also said “there has not been an agreement” between the parties – like a plea agreement – in which Biden would plead guilty to some charges in exchange for other charges being dropped. The only offer that Hunter’s team ever got from prosecutors, Lowell said, was for him to plead guilty to all nine counts.

Special Counsel David Weiss and his prosecutorial team are expected to  object to Biden’s Alford Plea.

Prosecutors allege that Biden failed to pay $1.4 million in federal taxes and evaded taxes by filing tax returns with fraudulent business deductions. They also allege that Biden was using his money on luxury cars, extravagant hotels and sex workers.

The president’s son eventually paid roughly $2 million in back taxes and penalties.

Leading up to the trial in pre-trial motions, the judge refused to allow Biden’s defense team to present evidence that he paid the belated tax payment or their alleged arguments about the potential origins of their client’s addiction during the time in question. The rulings were a severe blow to Biden’s defense.

If this plea is rejected, the trial is expected to reveal more salacious and embarrassing details of Biden’s “extravagant” lifestyle in which he spent money on pornography websites, strip clubs, and drugs.

Hallie Biden, Hunter’s sister-in-law who was married to his late brother Beau, was given full immunity by the prosecutors to testify against him as she had in the Delaware criminal trial in June. In that case, Hunter Biden was convicted on three felony counts for lying on gun purchase papers.

Hallie Biden had a romantic relationship with Hunter after her husband died.

Although that relationship lit a flame of criticism and questions within the family and even among friends and supporters, it was publicly endorsed by then Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden when the New York Post broke the story in 2017 while Hunter was still married to his first wife, Kathleen Buhle.

At that time, there were five grandchildren involved. Hallie Biden had two children with her late husband. Hunter and Kathleen Biden shared three daughters. Both Hunter and Hallie Biden went to rehab for drug use when they were together.

President Joe Biden has said that he will not pardon his son in either of his cases, but that was before he dropped out of the presidential race.
