Nancy Pelosi has been on the rocks this week. First, Nance's Democratic comrades began to cut her off for failing to serve impeachment articles to the Senate. Senate Republicans have drafted a motion which will likely pass that mandates impeachment articles be formally sent to the Senate no later than 25 days after they are passed.
Even Senator Diane Feinstein, the vintage California Democrat told reporters on Wednesday, "The longer it goes on the less urgent it becomes… So if it’s serious and urgent, send them over. If it isn’t, don’t send it over."
Next, after posturing mourning the loss of Soleimani, Pelosi raised a white flag faster than France when she issued a statement a few hours after news of Soleimani’s termination broke:
"Tonight's airstrike risks provoking further dangerous escalation of violence. America — and the world — cannot afford to have tensions escalate to the point of no return.”
Nancy also took some shots at President Trump over not being notified of the Commander in Chief’s intentions, writing on Twitter:
But when Iran started lobbing off ballistic missiles toward U.S. bases in Iraq on Tuesday evening, Nancy was getting bombed at a pre-opening of the new ritzy restaurant, Danny Meyer’s Maialino Mare in D.C.
Of course, her team still swears that she never, ever drinks the firewater. After a condensed video highlighting of her mom’s slurred speech went viral, her own daughter claimed “Madam Speaker doesn’t even drink alcohol!”
Raise your drink if you have some doubts about that!
When Vice President Pence called Doesn’t-Even-Drink-Nancy personally at the lavish party to notify the Speaker of the House of the situation in Iraq, she reportedly told the aide in charge of her cellphone, “Tell him I’ll call him back!”
Two minutes later, the same aide handed her a note about the airbase bombing.
Speaker Pelosi could have still been hungover today when she announced that the House will be moving forward with a vote on a resolution curbing the President's “ability to take future military action against Iran without congressional authorization.”
Of course while Pelosi and her House don’t actually possess the authority necessary to change war powers resolutions, it does paint a pretty picture of Pelosi posturing for Iran’s benefit. The new resolution is worded so pointedly that it “would have specifically forbidden the drone strike ordered last week that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani.”
However, a direct challenge to the war powers act will still need to pass Congress and then be signed by President Trump himself. Even if the inevitable veto is challenged, no U.S. court is going to dictate a sitting President’s foreign policy. Therefore Pelosi is introducing it as a "concurrent resolution" which means that even if it passes, it will never be submitted to the president and thus has no force of law behind it.
Ironically, it was Quid Pro Joe Biden who penned the Legislation to Overhaul War Powers Act back in the mid-90’s that authorizes President Trump to protect American interests and remove terrorists like Qasem Soleimani. Biden's bill specifically gives the President “the statutory power to use military force to prevent or retaliate against a terrorist attack.” (C-SPAN)
Just like the impeachment articles, this newest resolution will pass the Democrat-controlled House and then show up to the Senate totally tanked.
