Representative Gohmert, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, tested positive for COVID-19. The congressman from Texas has a different message to Americans as he questions the reason he got the virus now, and the reason, he thinks, is because he started to wear a face mask. Gohmert told KETK-TV that he’s now been wearing a face mask more frequently, but somehow contracted the virus.
Gohmert said, “It’s really ironic, because you know a lot of people have made a big deal out of me not wearing a mask a lot, but in the last week or two. I have work a mask, more than I have in the whole last four months.” Gohmert was one of the key lawmakers who refused to wear a face mask, unless it was mandatory. He continued, “But I can’t help but wonder if my keeping a mask on and keeping it in place that if I might have put some germs or some of the virus onto the mask and breathed it in — I don’t know. But I got it, we’ll see what happens from here, but the reports of my demise are very premature.”
With the plan to travel with President Trump to Texas today, Gohmert tested positively. The White House is testing anyone who will be in close proximity with the president, and the results are immediate. He said he does not have any of the usual symptoms, but now has to self-quarantine.
Gohmert joked about the insistence from many government officials for people to wear a mask, “Obviously I’m not wearing the mask right now talking to you but you’re not at risk of getting it through the internet.”
The lawmaker from Texas said that he will quarantine for ten days, and make sure to wear a mask as to not spread the virus to others, noting that in this instance, it’s when a mask is most important. Gohmert said that Senator Rand Paul, who is a medical doctor, texted him and said the good news is that in ten days, he “should be immune.”
