Dr. Fauci, the head doctor for the coronavirus relief effort, is not confident about Russia’s announcement they have developed a COVID-19 vaccine. President Putin, who announced the completion of the vaccine, said his country is the first in the world to have regulatory approval. Putin said that after clinical testing, their vaccine has proven to give immunity to the coronavirus. But Fauci, who hopes the US will have a vaccine by the end of this year, is doubtful.
In a National Geographic panel, Fauci said, “Having a vaccine and proving that a vaccine is safe and effective are two different things.” The Russian’s virus, however, has not entered phase three of trials. Fauci said Americans need to understand the importance of a vaccine meeting safety and efficacy requirements.
The White House has been focused on developing a vaccine since the virus surged throughout the United States. As the race to complete a vaccine is worldwide, there are already 100 vaccine possibilities worldwide. The White House has said “President Trump is leading a once-in-a-generation effort to ensure Americans have access to a COVID-19 vaccine, and Trump said the development is “moving faster than anticipated.”
The administration vaccine effort, called Operation Warp Speed, is relying on the relationship between the private and public sectors to achieve a vaccine in “record time.” The goal, according to the White House, is to have 300 million doses that are “safe and effective” available by January 2021. After effective clinical trials, AtraZeneca, Moderna, and Pfizer have entered phase three in clinical trials.
On Tuesday, the White House finalized an agreement with Moderna to pay $1.5 billion for 100 million doses of their coronavirus vaccine, and already has a purchase agreement with Johnson & Johnson , AstraZeneca Plc , Pfizer Inc and BioNTech for their vaccines which are still under development . The White House is hoping to secure 500 million doses for the United States as soon as the vaccines are available.
The U.S. government has already spent $12 billion on potential vaccines. This number is going to increase, as Trump wants to virus to be accessible to all Americans.
