As cities across the United States continue to burn, President Trump floated the idea of invoking the Insurrection Act, which allows the president to send in active-duty troops to states.

Trump said, “We’re not supposed to be involved unless we’re invited in by the people that run-these are all Democrat-run cities, including DC. We’re not supposed to go in unless you call it an insurrection.” The president was speaking about the protests that happened outside the White House after his nomination acceptance speech. Trump said, “We’re not going to let that happen to people who go to the White House to celebrate our country.”

President Trump received intense backlash for sending in federal enforcement officers, which was completely legal, to Portland, Oregon after months of protests that resulted in rioting and looting. WH Press Secretary, who has defended the president’s decision, said it was the right thing to do to bring law and order to these cities.

But McEnany today said that Trump would not use the Insurrection Act, and instead, wants to work with leaders to bring peace to their cities. She said, “The president does not want to invoke the Insurrection Act, which has been used very sparingly. But what he does want is to help these cities where he can.”

The recent unrest in cities, as protests continue into the fall, have become a major focal point for Republicans, and now Democrats. Biden, for the first time in his campaign, has started to increasingly speak out against the unrest and condemn the violence. Democrats, however, have been less vocal about the protests, and have looked over the looting and instead focused on the racial injustice message. The response has generally split lawmakers in two, and President Trump has continued to hint that he will use federal force to bring peace to the states.
