Doing an interview with CNN seems like a safe bet for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, but while she is facing criticism from both sides of the aisle for her unwillingness to compromise, CNN called her out for playing politics. 

In what was surely a packed interview, Wolf Blizter asked Pelosi to look Americans in the eye, and tell them why she won’t accept the Republicans’ deal to pass a second coronavirus relief package. In order to deflect, Pelosi said that Blister was being a “Republican apologist,” and said he didn’t know what was going on. 

While President Trump has been unclear about what he would sign into law, he indicated that he was willing to up the second coronavirus deal to $1.8 trillion, a much larger number that the White House was originally set to agree on. 

Blitzer defended himself against Pelosi’s attack, saying that her own Democratic colleagues have argued that Pelosi should accept the deal. So far, Pelosi’s legislative response has been to form a committee of outsiders to assess the 25th amendment, and determine if the president is “fit for office.”

Pelosi said, “They minimize the need for childcare, which is the threshold with which people, mothers and fathers, can go to work if they have that. I want this very much now, because people need help now, but it's no use giving them a false thing just because the president wants to put a check with his name on it in the mail.”

The Speaker of the House, while she has the House majority, has to pass through the Senate and the White House. While she has hoped that coronavirus pressures would aid her advances, they have fallen short. Even Blitzer, who understand politics and the Democrats’ angle, wanted her to provide some answer as to why she won’t compromise. 

This was Pelosi’s answer: “I hope you'll ask the same question of the Republicans on why they don't want to meet the needs of the American people. But let me say to those people because all of my colleagues -- we represent these people ... and their needs are not addressed in the president's proposal. So when you say to me, "Why don't you accept theirs?' Why don't they accept ours?"' 

Pelosi was hopeful that after President Trump contracted the coronavirus, he would be more sympathetic to a larger coronavirus aid bill. Instead, Trump doubled down on his original stance towards the virus. Pelosi, who is concerned about keeping her majority, will not budge on key issues. But while she has major power, it is not enough to push forward her legislation.
