Rep. Jim Jordan, a Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, spoke in support of Project Veritas’ rights as journalists to investigate government corruption without fear of retaliation or persecution.

Rep. Jordan said he supported Rep. Jerry Nadler’s HR 4330 bill, which codifies what constitutes a journalist.

The provisions that Rep. Jordan cites were authored and introduced by Rep. Andy Biggs, and those provisions clearly define the scope of what it means to be a journalist. Here is some of what the bill states:

This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Protect Reporters fromExploitative State Spying Act’’ or the ‘‘PRESS Act’’.
SEC. 2. DEFINITIONS.…(1) COVERED JOURNALIST.—The term ‘‘covered journalist’’ means a person who regularly gathers, prepares, collects, photographs, records, writes, edits, reports, or publishes news or information that concerns local, national, or international events or other matters of public interest for dissemination to the public.

    (5) JOURNALISM.—The term ‘‘journalism’’means gathering, preparing, collecting, photographing, recording, writing, editing, reporting,or publishing news or information that concernslocal, national, or international events or other mat-ters of public interest for dissemination to the public.

The bill clearly refutes the Justice Department’s self-servingly baseless assertion that Project Veritas does not engage in journalism.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I appreciate the chairman’s remarks. I do think this is legislation that is long due- time to pass. We should all support this legislation and important protections it provides for journalists. There’s a reason why the Founders chose to enshrine Freedom of the Press and the First Amendment to the Constitution.  It’s that important. Over the years, versions of this bill have received widespread support from across the political spectrum, as the chairman mentioned. In fact, the first version of this bill was introduced, as the chairman indicated by Vice President- former Vice President Pence when he was a member of this committee.

Liberty depends on Freedom of the Press, whether it’s Tucker Carlson, James O’Keefe, Glen Greenwald, Sheryl Attkisson, or Bob Woodward.Good reporters are those who are committed to holding the government accountable.Journalists are often the first to expose government abuses, waste, fraud, and encroachment on personal freedoms, and a critical aspect of Freedom of the Press is the pursuit of truth without government entanglements or intimidation.

Administrations have been guilty of unjustly targeting journalists, but none in recent years more so than the Obama administration, whose control on the flow of information has been described as quote, “The most aggressive since the Nixon administration,” and the current administration is proving itself to be- isn’t proven itself to be much better.

In fact, just last month we learned that the Biden Justice Department targeted Project Veritas, a news organization specializing in undercover journalism. Project Veritas was subjected to an extensive investigation by the FBI, including having its email seized on Microsoft servers. In a free country, we need to make sure that the government cannot unmask journalist sources without good cause. This bill provides those protections and it is time we get this legislation signed into law.I urge your support for the bill and yield back the balance of my time.
