Podcaster and former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon, has been sentenced to 120 days in jail but was released until his appeals are resolved. The sentence came after his July trial on 2 counts of contempt of congress related to the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.
Bannon was found guilty of defying a congressional subpoena to testify before congress about Jan. 6 events and to turn over documents related to the Capitol incident. Bannon refused to appear for his deposition and never complied with the request for documents.
The minimum sentence Bannon faced was 30 days in jail for each count which would mean a total of 60 days behind bars. The prosecution, however, was pushing for 6 months of jail time and the maximum fine of $200,000.
Bannon has insisted since his trial that he will appeal the court's verdict and has asked to be placed on probation, rather than face incarceration.
If sentenced to time in jail, Bannon would have been the first person to serve time for defying a congressional subpoena in over 50 years.
The judge called a recess at 10:50 a.m. and returned with a sentence at 11:05 a.m.
The trial and sentencing for Bannon's refusal to comply with a congressional subpoena for the Jan. 6 riots is not his only legal trouble. Bannon is also facing charges in NY State Court and was previously pardoned by former President Donald Trump for federal charges.
