New York City Mayor Eric Adams has joined a growing number of governors and mayors calling for intervention from the federal government to deal with the overwhelming humanitarian crisis at the southern border. At a January 17 press conference, Mayor Adams said, “There must be a national czar,” to manage the border crisis, despite Vice President Kamala Harris already having that position.

Adams went on to say, “I think it should be done through FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency].”

“We should treat this the same way we treat any major disaster or major crisis. That should be coordinating with the Border Patrol, coordinating with our cities, our states, to make sure that we as a country absorb this national issue,” he added.

Adams’ calls for a national czar comes after he spent a week in the border city of El Paso, Texas, which he described as a “beautiful city” that has been “overrun” with a recent influx of illegal border crossers.

Meanwhile, El Paso’s Democratic Mayor Oscar Leeser has declared a state of emergency due to the increase in illegal migrants flooding the city. Both mayors have been critical of the Biden administration and its open border policies, claiming that the federal government needs to do more to reduce the burden on border states and the cities and states that the immigrants have been bused to.

While in El Paso, Adams said, “Our cities are being undermined. And we don’t deserve this. Migrants don’t deserve this and the people who live in the cities don’t deserve this. We expect more from our national leaders to address this issue in a real way.”

Despite New York City’s shelters reaching max capacity and Adams previously saying that there is “no room” left in New York, he has said that suspending New York’s sanctuary status to deter migrants is “not on the agenda at all.”

“I thin of, as we celebrated the birth of Jesus, he was faced with a ‘no more room,’ but there was a place that was found. And that’s what we are doing. We have no more room, but we are still finding spaces and accommodating,” Adams said.

“And we are going to continue to do that. That is our law, that is our obligation, and that is what’s morally right,” he added.

While Adams struggles to find housing for the illegal immigrants flooding New York, Vice President Kamala Harris, who was appointed “border czar” by President Biden in March 2021 has only visited the southern border once in June 2021. More than 150,000 encounters between U.S. Customs and Border Protection and illegal migrants has occurred each month since Harris was given responsibility for the border crisis. Over 2.3 million encounters were recorded for fiscal year 2022. It is the highest number on record.

In October 2022 when Harris visited Texas for a political fundraiser but failed to visit the border, Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-TX) said, “I don’t understand why the vice president just own’t take an hour plane ride to the border and just listen, talk to people, just show up and say, ‘Hey, we are here to help.’ Just say, ‘The administration hasn’t abandoned you’…something!”

Despite repeated pleas to the White House for president and vice president to visit the border, it took 2 years before Biden finally visited the border for the first time last month where he was greeted with clean streets and a seemingly controlled border thanks to weeks of preparation by ICE and local authorities.

After his 3 hour tour of the border, Biden told reporters, “They need a lot of resources. We’re going to get it for them.” Yet, not even a full month later the mayor of New York City is begging the Biden administration to fill the position of a ‘national czar’ to get the border under control while the previously appointed ‘border czar’ sits in Washington, D.C. and turns the other cheek. Meanwhile, border cities are struggling to deal with the mass migration and cities across the country fight with the federal government to get the resources and assistance they need to house and support the flood of illegal border crossers.
