UPDATE: Emmer resigns as he does not have enough votes

Republican House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN) won his party's nomination for House Speaker on Tuesday following five rounds of ballots. 

The final tally was 117 for Emmer and 97 for Congressman Mike Johnson (LA), who is Vice Chair of the GOP Conference. 

Emmer’s nomination will now go to the House floor where he needs at least 217 votes to pass. 

The votes included several congressmen: Jack Bergman (MI), Byron Donalds (FLA), Kevin Hern (OK), Gary Palmer (Ala) Austin Scott (GA) and Pete Sessions (TX). 

Congressman Dan Meuser (PA) dropped out of the race Monday.

Palmer dropped out Tuesday. 

All candidates signed a unity pledge to support the speaker nominee during the House floor vote..

The top four candidates on the first, second and third ballot were Emmer, Johnson, Donalds and Hern. 

Emmer and Johnson were the top two in the fourth round, eliminating Hern who came in last. Donalds dropped out after coming in third place. 

Emmer went on to defeat Johnson in the fifth round.

The Republican-controlled House has not elected a speaker for nearly three weeks after eight GOP members ousted Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) along with the Democrats.
