The border security package addressing the most unprecedented human smuggling and trafficking influx of nearly 8 million illegals into the U.S. was dropped before the democrat-led U.S. Senate voted to proceed with a foreign aid package of $95 billion.
The U.S. border provisions were removed from the bill on Wednesday after a failed vote.
The foreign aid package pushes through aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan as well as humanitarian aide in Gaza.
The vote of 67-32 means the Senate can begin consideration of the $95 billion package. It is not yet clear yet whether there are enough votes in the chamber to carry it to its final passage.
“This is a good first step. This bill is essential for our national security,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on the floor after the vote. “Failure to pass this bill would only embolden autocrats like Putin and Xi, who want nothing more than America’s decline. Now that we are on the bill, we hope to reach an amendment with our Republican colleagues on amendments.”
While nearly all Democrats favor passage, Senate Republicans are divided on whether to approve the bill or filibuster it.
Aid to Ukraine is a high priority for President Joe Biden and this may be his last chance before the November election. Many conservatives in both the House and the Senate are opposed to aiding Ukraine and not addressing the border crises.
As the immigrants are fanned out to major urban cities like Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago and New York City and rural areas in Tennessee, Wisconsin and Maryland and beyond, more Americans are witnessing the economic strains on their communities as well as an increase in crime.
