Since the 1940s chloroquine has been used to treat the deadly disease of malaria caused by mosquito bites the infects over 200 million people every year. Recently the drug has been used in combination with other medications to alleviate the symptoms of Chinavirus (COVID-19). On Sunday the Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency authorization for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to be used for Chinavirus treatment.
In recent weeks President Trump has cited the early success stories from France and New York where doctors have used chloroquine combined with drugs like azithromycin (Z-Pak) and zinc sulfate. Getting innovative treatments and remedies to mitigate or cure the symptoms of Chinavirus has been a top priority of virus response team. The estimated timeline for a broadly distributed vaccine to inoculate people from Chinavirus is a year and and a half away so alternative solutions are needed.
Inexplicably, some Democrat governors have banned the sale of chloroquine in their states. Misinformation campaigns by Fake News media have questioned the effectiveness of the drug and ridiculed the President for suggesting it as a possible solution for some patients. Now, thanks to a rapid response by the FDA America and the world will test effectiveness on the drug on a large number of cases. As President Trump has said about the drug, "Let's see how it works."
