After the U.S. government abandoned Afghanistan and turned the country over to the Taliban last August, the Biden administration gave Afghanistan more than $1 billion in aid via the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Now, a year later, USAID and Biden's treasury department won't tell anyone where the money went.

According to the Daily Caller, the Treasury and USAID are refusing to reply to requests for transparency from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), "in any capacity." Meanwhile, the State Department has released selective information regarding the $1.1 billion in aid that Biden gave to Afghanistan in the 14 months since U.S. forces pulled out of the country.

The refusal of the Treasury Department and USAID to release the information is a violation of SIGAR's congressional mandate according to a quarterly report released by SIGAR on Wednesday. The report states, "SIGAR, for the first time in its history, is unable this quarter to provide Congress and the American people with a full accounting of this U.S. government spending due to the non-cooperation of several U.S. government agencies."

The report went on to take direct aim at the Biden administration saying, "USAID and State legal counsels' claim that SIGAR's jurisdiction does not include such matters is not only contrary to the law, but a gross deviation from over 14 years of precedent set by three prior Administrations."

According to a USAID statement, the $1.1 billion in aid was provided to Afghanistan for "food and cash support, nutrition, healthcare, protection for women and children and agricultural inputs."

As with most things involving the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, it is likely that U.S. taxpayers will never know what happened to the more than $1 billion in U.S. aid that was essentially handed over to the Taliban given that the aid was provided after the U.S. had abandoned the country. It is most likely safe to say that it did not go to the Afghans it was intended to help.
