In a letter obtained by the Daily Mail, it has been revealed that a US Congressman wants Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to lose their royal titles due to their involvement in the US presidential election. 

While Prince Harry and Markle moved to the US, sparking outrage from British Royal fans, they have been quick to become involved in America’s politics. Congressman Jason Smith has sent a letter to British Ambassador to the US Karen Pierce. The Daily Mail reported the letter said, “As you know, the British Royal Family has long observed a policy of strict neutrality in regard to political matters. I am therefore concerned by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent comments regarding the United States Presidential Election, especially given international conversations surrounding foreign interference in our elections and the Duke's status as a guest of the United States.”

Markle urged her fans to vote against “hate speech” and said that November 3rd is the “most important election of our lifetime.”

Smith has said that foreign interference on a US election is of the upmost importance, and that because of their status, if they choose to interfere with a US election, there should be consequences. 

The letter continues, “Additionally while I underhand The Duke and Duchess no longer utilize the style of His or Her Royal Highness, they nevertheless retain these prefixes and are known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It is almost my understanding the Royal Family has stated these comments were made in a personal capacity, and the Duke and Duchess are no longer working members of the Royal Family. However, it is my view the titles and privileges they retain by permission of Her Majesty the Queen, given with the advice and consent of her government, prevent the Duke and Duchess from separating comments made in a personal capacity from their official position within the British Royal Family.”

Smith said that due to their status, and the following that they have from their status, their impact on the US election is unethical. By their association, their comments on the presidential election are a comment from the Queen herself.
