While President Trump has received backlash for wanting schools to reopen in the fall, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany clarified that the president wants to do what is best for the students, not for local officials.
After months of a shutdown due to the Coronavirus outbreak, President Trump wants to restore order, and specifically, he wants educational campuses to allow students to come back in person. McEnany said President Trump wants to increase funding for education, but he wants that funding to go to the student instead of the district which chooses to keep the school closed. McEnany said that because schools have closed, “there are real consequences.” She then went to a study published by The American Academy of Pediatrics, which have laid out the negative effects on students by schools being closed. These effects include learning deficits, increase of sexual abuse, increased substance abuse, and depression, among others.
McEnany said President Trump wants to reopen schools in the safest way possible, but he is not afraid of the teachers unions who want to keep them closed. She said that our “schools are essential and our teachers are essential workers.”
Many conservatives have marched to President Trump’s defense, and support him in reopening schools. Because of the protests that started during lockdown, they’re using these large gatherings as proof there is a double standard over what is encouraged, and what is forced to remain closed.
