Former South Carolina Governor and former US Ambassador to the United Nations grabbed national headlines when she said something that is not aligned with the national dialogue.  Speaking at the first night of the Republican National Convention, Haley said, “America is not a racist country.”

Of course, this sparked huge outcries from the left, as they tried to say that of course, a white woman would say this statement. But a minor fact that takes the air out of their argument, is that Haley is an Indian-American. So yes, she is a woman of color. And based on her experience as a UN Ambassador, who traveled throughout the world and dealt first hand with foreign countries, on top of being a governor in what is deemed often as a racist state, just made her assertion more poignant. 

Haley, who is the daughter of Indian immigrants, said, “My father wore a turban. My mother wore a sari. we faced discrimination and hardship, but my parents never gave into grievance and hate.” Haley was the first woman of color to be elected as South Carolina governor. She continued, “It’s now fashionable to say that America is racist. That is a lie. America is not a racist country.”

Haley was also the first governor to remove the Confederate flag from South Carolina’s state capital. In her speech, Haley addressed the Black church shooting that happened while she was governor.  She said, “After that horrific tragedy, we didn’t turn against each other. We came together, Black and white, Democrat and Republican. What happened then should give us hope now. America isn’t perfect, but the principles we hold dear are perfect.”

The former governor continued that every Black life matters, but that includes police officers, owners of small businesses, and black students shot on the playground. 

Haley asked the nation to come together, instead of turn on each other. As a woman of color, who has risen high in the political world, she is a strong voice to convey this message. Furthermore, the RNC is appealing to the minority vote, and because of her background, there is no one better to appeal to these voters than Nikki Haley.
