Senator Tim Scott, the sole African American senator in Congress, came out swinging against the racial uproar over the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. For months, the nation has watched cities turn into chaos as protestors fight against systemic racism. But along the way, the message has been lost, and the result has been an increase in violence, looting, and calls to defund the police. Statues have been torn down, small businesses destroyed, and people have been seriously injured.
So Tim Scott addressed the elephant in the room, immediately. And he had a different message for the American people. He said, “Because while this election is between Donald Trump and Joe Biden…it is not solely about Donald Trump and Joe Biden. It’s about the promise of America. It’s about you and me…our challenges and heartbreaks, hopes and dreams.”
Scott then went on to address police reform, and more importantly, the Democrats failure to negotiate a bill that works for all Americans. Scott said they wanted “the issue more than they wanted a solution.” Scott asked the American people if they “want a society that breeds success, or a culture that cancels everything it even slightly disagrees with?”
For Scott, the answer is simple. He championed his mother, who worked 15 hours a day and always pushed him to aim high, even if that meant failure. Scott said his own personal experiences growing up are why he pushes for school choice, because quality education in America is “the closest thing we have to magic.”
Scott then said that after starting a small business, he decided to run for Congress in a predominantly white district. But he won, because of who he was, an not because the color of his skin.” He then went on to champion President Trump’s record, talking about Opportunity Zones and how the economy has improved for Hispanic and Black Americans.
Scott asked the American people to not look at the candidates, but look at what they’e done. He spoke about the 1994 Crime Bill, which led to more Arican Americans behind bars. Scott said, “Joe Biden said if a black man didn't vote for him, he wasn't truly black.
Joe Biden said black people are a monolithic community. Joe Biden said poor kids can be just as smart as white kids.” Then, he spoke about how unless you’re a blue state millionaire, Biden plans to take more of your money. Scott said, “Make no mistake: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris want a cultural revolution. A fundamentally different America.”
In a powerful closing statement, Scott said his family, “went from cotton to Congress in one lifetime.” And that if you vote for Donald Trump, you can also make that dream into a reality.
