Democrat U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler beat his colleague, Rep. Carolyn Maloney on Tuesday.

The New York Board of Elections declared Nadler the winner with 56% of the vote with 100% of the votes counted.

Maloney, a champion against human trafficking for years, garnered only 24% of the vote.

Both were elected in 1992 during the Clinton administration.

New York’s newly created 12th Congressional District, as a result of redistricting, pitted these senior democratic incumbents against each other.

They both hold leadership positions in the U.S. House of Represenatives.

Nadler is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Maloney is chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to endorse either candidate.

Nadler’s campaign led with the notion that he is New York City's last Jewish representative in the House. He was endorsed by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and the The New York Times.

Maloney ran a campaign focusing on women’s rights hoping she would energize her base because of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

As chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Nadler led both impeachments of former President Donald Trump
